PTE Reading: Multiple Choice, Single Answer (Practice with Answers)

Multiple Choice (Single Answer) is a PTE Academic Reading task where you read a short academic passage and choose the one option that best answers the question. It looks like the easiest Reading format, but the distractors are built from real comprehension traps: half-true statements, wrong scope, and options that are true of the passage but don't answer the question asked.

Water is a vital resource that is essential for human survival. However, the world's water supply is facing numerous threats, including pollution, climate change, and over-extraction. Water conservation is the practice of using water efficiently and reducing waste, and it is an important step in protecting this valuable resource.

There are many ways to conserve water, including fixing leaks, using low-flow fixtures, and harvesting rainwater. Additionally, individuals can make a difference by taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while brushing their teeth, and using drought-resistant plants in their gardens.

Water conservation also has economic benefits, as it can reduce the cost of water treatment and distribution. Furthermore, conserving water can help to protect aquatic ecosystems and support biodiversity.

Weather forecasting is the process of predicting the weather conditions for a specific region over a certain period of time. It involves using data from various sources, including weather stations, radar, and satellites, to analyze patterns and make predictions. Weather forecasting is an important tool for many industries, including aviation, agriculture, and emergency management.

There are several types of weather forecasting, including short-term forecasting, which predicts the weather over a short period of time, and long-term forecasting, which predicts the weather over a longer period of time. Weather forecasting also involves using computer models, such as the Global Forecast System (GFS) model, to analyze data and make predictions.

In recent years, advances in technology have improved the accuracy of weather forecasting. For example, the use of Doppler radar has allowed forecasters to track storms and predict severe weather events more accurately. Additionally, the use of satellite imagery has allowed forecasters to track weather patterns over large areas.

Strategy · how to approach PTE Multiple Choice (Single)

  1. Read the question stem before the passage so you know what relationship to look for (main idea, purpose, or detail).
  2. Cross out options that are factually true but do not answer the question. This is the single most common trap.
  3. Watch for scope shifts: an option that exaggerates ('only', 'always', 'never') usually signals a distractor.
  4. This task contributes to your Reading score only. Do not over-invest time; if two options remain after elimination, pick the more general one and move on.
  5. Practise under real timing: the whole Reading section is a single timed block, so single-answer MCQs are a 'bank time for Re-order / Fill blanks' task.
